Drums and Percussion Education

Welcome to the private teaching practice of John Doing,

Teaching Experience

In addition to small adjunct faculty positions at NYU and UW-Madison, I have presented masterclasses (with groups and solo) at:

Percussive Arts Society International Convention, University of Michigan, Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, University of Northern Colorado, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Ohio University, University of Toledo, Fresno City College, Bowling Green State University, Lawrence University, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Classically trained in percussion at University of Wisconsin-Madison and fully immersed in ethnomusicology, I traveled to Brazil in 2010 to spend time learning percussion in Rio, Salvador, and Recife.

Then I went to New York University for a Masters in Jazz Performance. I studied with Dafnis Prieto, Stefon Harris, John Hadfield, Kenny Werner, Jean-Michel Pilc, and many other great jazz cats.

Still on the world music tip, I started working at Wula Drum (then based in Brooklyn) and went to Guinea and Mali to study djembe and Malinke music.

Touring with an NYU group brought me to Peru where I learned the cajón.

I played my first Off-broadway show in 2014 and then got into Broadway touring.

I finally made it to Cuba in 2017 to study congas and timbales.
