COACHING PROGRAM

A community of learners on the path to Total Percussion

After 20 years teaching private lessons, I’m really excited about this new hybrid teaching model. After lots of research and investing in educational programs, I’ve developed a private lessons program that serves the modern total percussionist in a new, 3-point approach:

1] weekly live classes

2] weekly 1:1 mini-lesson

3] course library

Who is it for?

  • Students preparing for college music programs

  • Teachers looking to expand their repertoire

  • Professionals looking for career coaching and advice

  • Aspiring Professionals who need help making the leap

  • Drummers and Percussionists Worldwide who want access to a dedicated and experienced teacher.

“During the first few lessons, we discussed my background and aims, and came up with a solid plan for how I should proceed. John's broad experience was really helpful for this process.”

–Danny P. (past student in Brooklyn, NY)

  • Ease of use

Everthing is in one place on the site - just log in and you’re there.

Hi-tech services with low tech requirements: When I ability to view videos online. And you’ll probably want to be able to access Zoom to join our weekly calls, but technically you can dial in by phone…

  • Better Together!

Be a part of a community to discuss what you are learning and to see how other people work and learn.

It really helps to see somebody else going through the same thing as you, and how they approach it. We can learn a lot from watching fellow students learn and from watching the instructor teach other students.

Doing Drums seeks to improve upon the concept of the weekly lesson. In my experience, weekly lessons with a teacher at their studio, your home, or your school has always been the way to learn an instrument. Until I started touring a lot in recent years, I had a steady roster of 10-15 private weekly students on drums, percussion, and piano. I tried to have students come to my studio as much as possible, but I’ve also done in-home lessons. I did this for almost 20 years before the pandemic, and the hardest part for me was managing the schedule and the travel time to the student’s home, the hardest part for the students seemed to be the ability to physically get to lessons. It’s hard to make it every week, I get that.

2] Weekly “Office Hours”

A 1 on 1 meeting with your instructor is available to you each week. Just log in and sign up for an appointment right in your account.

You are welcome to ask your questions in the weekly class, but this way offers 1 on 1 time for those who want it. If you prefer to submit a recording or written question, your instructor will be happy to give timely feedback on one request per week.

3] Full Access to a growing online Course Library

My goal for some years now has been to record instructional videos to support my teaching. I provide students with some kind of voice memo or video recording at the end of almost every lesson so that they can have some way to reference the material.

The purpose of the library is to dive deep into the various techniques and knowledge that underly our craft. There are some courses to be completed and you can track your progress in your account, but most of the content references “how to play” drum and percussion instruments. We are responsible for many instruments as percussionists, for example Triangle, Tambourine, Cowbell, Congas, Bongos, Djembe, Cajón, and many more. With your membership account at Doing Drums, you’ll have full access to a growing library of drum and percussion techniques and concepts.
